The model 1966 was characterized by a grille made of a shape that reminded one of an electric shaver. The lights, the retractable type, were used the last time the 1942 DeSoto. For their opening and closure was used an electrical system and lights revolved 180 degrees. When closed, the grille had seemed made of a single block. At rear lights cover the entire width of the body. Within these had been inserted the words CHARGER.
The interior of the Charger were composed of four individual seats and a center console that ran throughout the cockpit. The rear seats and the center armrest can be folded forward and the divider between the trunk and passenger compartment could be lowered by allowing you to create a large load. Other unique features of this model of the Charger were the door panels, courtesy lights and instrumentation. The latter was particularly interesting as to illuminate the instruments were not used by normal bulbs bulb was used but a dual-electroluminescent. The instruments available to the driver were four: tachometer, fuel level, tachometer and temperature valves.
The engines were only available from V8 engines, and could choose from four different units. The smaller displacement engine was 318 ci (5.2 L) with dual carburetor body. It was then the 361 ci (5.9 L). This propeller came from those used on commercial vehicles with a dual carburetor body. Then followed the 383 ci (6.3 L) with four carburetor bodies while at the summit will put the new Street Hemi 426 ci (7.0 L). The best-selling model turned out to be the one with the 383 engine that delivers 325 hp (242 kW). The total sales were 37,344 Charger, which result can be considered a success since the introduction of the car was a half years.
In the same year the Dodge did attend the Dodge Charger fastback in the Nascar championship in the hope of making it a winning model. But it was discovered that at high speeds the back tended to rise by reducing the road holding and making the guide, according to pilots, similar to the one on the ice. The designers of the Dodge then installed a small appendix aerodynamics that make the car more stable at higher speeds to 240 km / h (150 mph). To comply with the rules of the Nascar championship for 1966 and 1967 this small spoiler became available, on request, also on production cars. The introduction of this flap made the Charger the first U.S. production vehicle to be equipped with a spoiler. By David Pearson at the controls of the Charger team Cotten won 14 races and eventually won the championship.
